Bonifacio Day is a national public holiday in the Philippines. This holiday locally known as ‘Araw ng Kapanganakan ni Bonifacio’, is an annual commemoration in the Philippines held every 30th day of November. The holiday is observed to honor and celebrate the birthday of Andres Bonifacio, a Filipino revolutionary leader who led the society known as Katipunan.

Origin of Bonifacio Day

Filipinos have been annually celebrating Bonifacio Day since 1921. This holiday commemorates the birthday of Andres Bonifacio, one of the greatest National Heroes in the Philippines.

Who is Andres Bonifacio?

Andres Bonifacio, commonly known as “Father of the Philippine Revolution” , was a Filipino revolutionary leader who led and founded the nationalist Katipunan society. Katipunan, otherwise known as “Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan” or KKK, was a Philippine revolutionary movement created by Bonifacio to fight against the Spanish colonizers. The Philippines has been under the Spanish rule for more than 300 years and the KKK aims to gain Philippine Independence through a revolution. Bonifacio’s heroic actions made him one of the most notable heroes in the Philippine history. He played an important role in the battle for Philippine freedom. Unlike Jose Rizal (the country’s main national hero) who is honored on his death date, Bonifacio is remembered on his birthday as he was killed by his fellow countrymen rather than by foreign colonizers.

When did Bonifacio Day become a holiday?

Bonifacio Day officially became a public holiday after the Philippine Legislature passed Act No. 2946, declaring the 30th of November as national holiday in commemoration of Andres Bonifacio’s birthday. The declaration was signed with a decree by the American Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison.
