Is Hari Raya Haji a public holiday in Singapore?
Hari Raya Haji, also known as Eid al-Adha or Feast of the Sacrifice, is a religious celebration observed by the Muslims in Singapore. It is declared a public holiday, so schools and most businesses suspend operation.
While its celebratory date varies annually in the Gregorian calendar, it is observed on a fixed date in the Islamic lunar calendar, where it falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, Muslims’ twelfth and final month.
Hari Raya Haji Origin
This holiday is celebrated to commemorate Prophet Abraham’s faith and devotion towards Allah, the one and only God in Islam. Under Allah’s command, he was told to sacrifice his son Ismael, to which Abraham obeyed completely. Yet, before he could sacrifice his son, Allah intervened and gave him a lamb as a replacement instead.
Hari Raya Haji also indicates the end of 'hajj', an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca (Islam’s holiest city). It is one of the five pillars of Islam and is a religious journey where all capable Muslims are obliged to perform at least once in their lifetime.
Hari Raya Haji Traditions in Singapore
Like Muslims in other parts of the world, Muslims in Singapore put on their finest clothing on this day. They visit any mosques near them to offer prayers and listen to solemn sermons. This is usually followed by a korban and a visit to their loved ones. A special meal is also shared between families and friends.
What is Korban?
Korban is one of the rituals done by the Muslims during Hari Raya Haji. It is an act of worship where livestock such as sheep/lambs, goats, cows, and camels are sacrificed and slaughtered. The meat is then divided into three parts: one-third is for the family offering the sacrifice, to be shared with relatives and friends, another one-third is for the needy, and the rest is for those who performed the korban.
