Is Labour Day a public holiday in Philippines?
Labor Day is held on May 1st each year and is declared a national holiday in the Philippines. Labor Day originates from the eight-hour workday movement. It is known as ‘Araw ng mga Manggagawa’ in the Filipino language and is celebrated in the Philippines to acknowledge the contributions of the workers to the country’s progress.
How did Labor Day start in the Philippines?
Although Philippines’ first official Labor Day celebration is held on May 1st, 1913, it was on May 1st, 1903 when Labor Day was, for the first time, realized in the country. It was done through the efforts of the Unión Obrera Democrática Filipina, the first modern trade union federation in the Philippines. On this day, more than a hundred thousand Filipino workers marched from Plaza Moriones in Tondo, Manila to the Malacañang Palace (official residence of the Philippine government) to demand for better benefits and fairer working conditions.
Labor Day Activities in the Philippines
Similar to other countries, Labor Day is also used by thousands of trade unions in the Philippines to organize events and raise relevant issues related to improving the Filipinos’ labor relations. The biggest event is usually held in Manila (capital city of the country) as it houses the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) – located in Quezon City, Metro Manila, and the country’s largest national trade union center.
Short Trips
On the other hand, since majority are given a day off for Labor Day, most Filipino families used it for recreation. Most likely, many will go for a short trip if this day falls either on a Friday/Monday as it creates a long weekend. Other than that, this day is often used by the majority as a breather from school or work and simply take advantage of it and relax at home.
