For one, it has been said that Saint Valentine of Terni died because of his defiance in the order of Emperor Claudius II. That was after the emperor ordered to disallow young lovers to get married. Another story said that he died in an attempt to help Christians get away from Roman jail. Before he died, he wrote a letter "From your Valentine" to his young lover. These theories have gained popularity and eventually, Valentine’s Day was established, following the courageous and romantic act of Valentine. Today, Valentine’s Day is seen as the perfect day to express one’s love towards others.

Many Americans celebrate Valentine’s Day by showing their affection and love towards people who are important in their lives. While other countries may treat this day as a romantic holiday, for the Americans, the day’s celebration is not only meant for romantic love, but it also extends towards friends, co-workers, parents, and other family members. Greetings like "Happy Valentine's Day" can be heard throughout the day.

Like other countries, the most common symbols well-recognized in the United States during Valentine’s Day include hearts, flowers (especially red roses), chocolates, champagne or wine, cupid image, and many others. Mostly, the people in the country celebrate Valentine’s Day by going on a romantic dinner outside or even at home. A special meal is usually shared by the couples on this day. It has also become a customary practice for someone to cook for their family or significant others during this special occasion. Traditional foods prepared include chocolate truffles, cupcakes, strawberry cheesecake, spaghetti carbonara, Valentine's biscuits, heart-shaped cookies, and others. Valentine’s Day in the country is also taken as perfect for setting up a proposal. Hence, there are many men who would choose this day to propose to their ladies.
