Is Veterans Day a public holiday in United States?

Every 11th day of November, a federal holiday is observed in the United States called Veterans Day. This holiday is celebrated each year to honor and acknowledge all military veterans (living or deceased) who have served for the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans Day Origin

Initially, this holiday was called Armistice Day. When the armistice agreement (peace agreement) was signed between Germany and the Allied nations, World War 1 came to an end. That historic event happened at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month back in year 1918, which is then called the Armistice Day. Armistice Day was first celebrated on its first anniversary the following year, on November 11, 1919. President Woodrow Wilson delivered an address to the general public about the importance of that day to the American society. Few years later, in 1926, congress passed a resolution calling for its annual observance, and by year 1938 Armistice Day became an official federal holiday in the United States.

From Armistice Day to Veterans Day

Originally, Armistice Day was to thank the service of World War 1 veterans, but that changed after the occurrence of World War 2. President Dwight Eisenhower officially revised the name of the holiday from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in 1954, which was then passed by the United States Congress in 1968. Since then, veterans of all wars (both in wartime or peacetime) are honored and recognized on November 11 every year.

Veterans Day Traditions in the United States

Since Veterans Day is declared a federal holiday, government offices, post offices, banking institutions, and schools are suspended (though there are some schools which remain open and have special activities prepared to celebrate the day). Many businesses closed too, so most of the American workers have the day off. Americans usually celebrate this day by attending Veteran Day parades, ceremonies, social gatherings, and other festivities. To thank the veterans for their services to the country, a lot of restaurant- owners typically give them discounts or free meals on this day. It is also common to see some houses or backyards having American flag decorations as many wanted to take part on the celebration.

Veterans Day Parades

Small and large cities in each state traditionally organize parades during the holiday. Many Americans celebrate this day by watching or attending these events. Floats and marching bands are seen in the parades, alongside thousands of marchers or parade-goers. These parade-goers are often dressed up in red, blue, and white outfits to represent the colors of the United States flag. Most of the day’s participants include numerous veterans’ groups, families and relatives of the veterans, active officers, junior ROTC members, and many others. And though there are various Veterans Day parades held throughout the country, the one in New York City is considered one of the largest (if not the largest) with over 500,000 attendees.

Cemetery Visits

It is also customary for some Americans to visit the graves of the deceased veterans on Veterans Day. Those people who died while in service of the US military are buried at the country’s National Cemeteries. So, on this day, some Americans have made it a tradition to visit any national cemetery near their location or residences and pay respect to the deceased heroes. Flags and flowers are usually brought to be left at each veteran’s gravestones. Additionally, every Veterans Day, a national ceremony is also held at Arlington National Cemetery.
