Origin of Liberation Day

Liberation Day known in its Italian name as a ‘Festa della liberazione’, is a national holiday celebrated every April 25th in Italy, a country in south-central part of Europe. Other holiday names used by Italians for this day include the Anniversary of the Resistance, 25 April, or the Anniversary of Italy’s Liberation, the day when the people in the country got emancipated. Liberation Day remembers the end of the fascist regime and the cease of Nazi Germany occupancy in the country. During World War II, Italians who were against fascism formed a resistance group against Nazi Germany forces. This holiday also celebrates the victory of the Italian Resistance Movement against the German and Italian fascists. It also honors those who fought during the World War II.

Liberation Day is a national public holiday in the country. It falls on Sunday, April 25 of year 2021. This holiday means a lot for Italian people and most of them consider this as a special event. While other tourist sites and few businesses remain open in this day, the government offices and services, banks, schools, and such are close. People get a day off from work and spend time celebrating this day.

Why is Liberation Day in Italy celebrated on April 25th?

The first celebration of Liberation Day was on 25th day of the month of April on year 1946. It took place first in Bologna on April 23rd, taken over to Genoa on the same day. The reason why April 25th is marked as significant day is because it was also the day where Milan and Turin got liberated. By May 1st, all of the colonies in the northern part of Italy were freed. The Provisions on festive occasions decree signed the bill on April 22, 1946 which marked the April 25th as a national holiday. On May 27,1949, it was declared as the anniversary of the annual national holiday.


Liberation Day Activities and Traditions in Italy

Most cities in Italy are filled with organized public events such as parades, marches, concerts, among others. People attend these public activities and events. For some Italians, holding and raising the flag is a way to show respect for the holiday. Usually, the Italian President, the head of the government, give remarkable speeches to make people remember and give importance of the set holiday.

Bella Ciao

The anthem of the Italian’s Resistance (anti-fascists) named Bella Ciao is usually played on this holiday. It is an Italian folk song being played by either in the radio or band in the streets during parades and it is also sung on street corners by different groups of people.

Visiting Historical Sites and Museums

Some Italians opt to visit some tourist sites such as monuments, battlegrounds, and other historic places during Liberation Day. Some attractions which houses historical pieces that were involved during the World War II is also a popular destination on this holiday. One of the most known historical sites include the Monte Cassino Abbey, the spot where the major and massive battle occurred between the Allies and Axis forces. The entire nation gives honor to those who died serving its country from the Nazis at its last breath. Generally, the most common activities on this day in Italy include attending events like rallies, public gatherings, parades, concerts, historic monuments, and other outdoor events.
