Is Remembrance Day a public holiday in Canada?

Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday in Canada that is observed every November 11th of each year. It is celebrated to give honour to those armed forces who bravely served the country during war and conflict, especially to those soldiers who died with allegiance for Canada. On this day, schools, most businesses, banks and government offices are closed.

Remembrance Day Origin in Canada

Remembrance Day is also referred to as the Armistice Day and Poppy Day. It was first observed on 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth to remember the armistice agreement that marks the end of hostilities of the First Word War. When the armistice agreement (peace agreement) was signed by Germany and Allies on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month on 1918, the hostilities formally ended. Such event was referred to as the Armistice Day.

From 1921 to 1930, Armistice Day in Canada was observed on the first Monday of the week in which November 11 fell, same day as the celebration of the Thanksgiving Day. On 1931, a bill was introduced by Alan Neill suggesting that Armistice Day should be observed on November 11 which was then passed by the House of Commons. It was the same bill that officially renamed the holiday as “Remembrance Day”.

Other countries also observe this event, though the official name of holiday may vary. For instance, United States call this holiday as Veterans Day.

Canadian Remembrance Day Traditions

It is a common practice by Canadian people to gather in a memorial park and have a moment of silence every 11th hour of November 11 yearly. On this day, people give tribute and acknowledge the courage of Canadians Armed Forces who served the country. On this day, it is common to see a lot of people wearing red poppy on their clothes as it symbolizes the Remembrance Day. For some people, it’s a way of showing support and recognition to Canadian troops

Some cities organized parades that are led by soldiers from past wars and this parade ends before 11 am at cenotaph. Attending ceremonies and church services are some of the traditional practices by Canadians on Remembrance Day.
