Republic Day, frequently known in its Italian name as ‘Festa della Repubblica’ (English: Festival of the Republic), is a national holiday held in Italy every 2nd day of June. Italian people observe this annual celebration to commemorate the day when Italy became a republic, a form of government where the power is controlled by people in their country.
Origin of Republic Day
The Festival of the Republic is one of the country’s cultural symbols. Italian people were given a chance to choose what state of the government they would consider. People were gathered to decide which exclusive form of leadership in the government they prefer. The possible course of action were in between the state of monarchy and republic. The popular vote took place on year 1946, which lasted from June 2 to June 3. The proclamation of the referendum was stated at the end of the second World War and majority of adult individuals were more partial with republic. On such event, over 12 million Italians were in favor for republic while for monarchy, 10,719,284 people went for it. To that note, Italy officially became a republic on year 1946.
When was the first celebration of Republic Day in Italy?
It has been said that the first noted celebration of Republic Day was on June 2,1947. That main celebration of Festa della Repubblica happened in the city of the northern part of Italy, Turin. Turin used to be the capital city of Italy which lasted for a few years, particularly from 1861 to 1865. On the following year, June 2,1948, the first parade was observed in Rome in Via Dei Fori Imperiali. Even though Italy’s Republic form of government has been established, Republic Day didn’t become a national public holiday until the year 1949.
Republic Day Traditions in Italy
Since this day is a federal holiday, it is expected that almost all of the organizations, banks, shops and establishments are likely to be closed. Though some occupational sites remain open on this holiday, they typically observe special and irregular schedules. Italian people look forward in celebrating this holiday among with their families, close friends, and relatives.
Attending Military Parades
People play a part in attending parades which are led by Italian Armed Forces, Police Officers, and Italian Red Cross. This military parade was first observed way back decades ago, since it was added in the protocol of the documented holiday on 1950. Rome would organize big parades with the participation of the Italy’s President.
Frecce Tricolori
Some cities would look after small festivals that many people can enjoy and get engaged to. The most interesting part of the day’s celebration is the featured display of the Frecce Tricolori, an aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Air Force. Frecce Tricolori consists of nine planes with white, green, and red smoke fly emitting over the monument of the first King and ruler of Italy, Vittorio Emmanuele II. The green, white and red colors represent the flag of Italy.

In view of the fact that the month of June is the start of the summer season, people would go on a picnic trip to also commemorate the said celebration.
