Is Boxing Day a public holiday in Kenya?

Boxing Day, otherwise known as Utamaduni Day in Kenya, is an annual holiday observed on the 26th of December, the day after Christmas. In the country, this holiday is honored as a public holiday. It is observed as the second day of Christmastide each year since it is the day when Kenyans exchange gifts with those nearest to them. Today, many people refer to Boxing Day as a shopping holiday because people typically go shopping for Christmas bargains and indulge themselves and their loved ones for Christmas gifts.

Origin of Boxing Day

People proposed distinct ideas concerning the holiday’s term. Some speculated that the term came from the opening of alms boxes, which were put in churches for the purpose of collecting donations. It is the day when the rich give gifts to the less fortunate. Whereas some people believed that it was also the day when masters gave their household servants a day off and presented them with Christmas gifts as a form of gratitude for outstanding service throughout the year. Servants would return home on the same day and present their loved ones boxed gifts, just as their masters had done.

Which nations are the first to begin the holiday?

The origin of Boxing Day can be traced back 800 years to the Middle Ages in the United Kingdom. The holiday is widely observed in the United Kingdom as well as other British Commonwealth nations such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The holiday's name is British in origin, with the first print credit being from 1833.

Boxing Day Traditions in Kenya

Utamaduni Day is commemorated as a public holiday. The majority of businesses, institutions, organizations, and schools are scheduled to be closed. However, if December 26 falls on weekend (such as Saturday or Sunday), the following weekdays (which are Monday and Tuesday), will be observed as the official public holiday instead. The holiday should be moved on a working day making the following weekdays as an additional holiday and laborers are expected to have a day-off for the holiday.

Opening of the gifts

Some individuals prefer to open their presents on this particular day. Since Christmas is so full of gifts, it would not be the same without them. People close to them would give them lovely presents, which many Kenyans would unwrap on the second day of the Christmastide.

Cleaning up

This day may be used by some Kenyans to clean up after the previous holiday, Christmas Day. The empty boxes would be discarded by those who had already gotten their Christmas presents. Many others, on the other hand, would like to unwind and spend time with their family at home, eating Christmas leftovers.

Shopping for the holiday’s sales

Because it is the day on which people go shopping to take advantage of boxing day deals, Boxing Day is now often referred to as a shopping holiday. Most shops are closed on Boxing Day since it is a public holiday. Some stores, on the other hand, opt to open and offer discounts, which many Kenyans would take advantage to stock up on home necessities. Kenyans would also be frantically searching for gifts for themselves and their loved ones.

Going in a trip

Some families might choose to take a short trip to celebrate Christmas. Due to the fact that Boxing Day occurs on the day after Christmas, some individuals will take a short vacation, go to the beach, and have a barbecue party or any other entertaining activities to take. The fact that they will be able to spend quality time with their family while on a vacation is all that counts to them.
