Mother's Day in the United Kingdom

On this holiday, most businesses and establishments usually open according to their normal hours; however, it might be apparent for the streets, mall, restaurants and other public places to be a little bit busier than normal. That is due to the very common practice for Mother’s Day celebration which is, most people are out to treat their mothers especially in restaurants, or people are out to buy gifts and presents for their mothers and/or mother figures. Since the Mother’s Day observance falls every Sunday of every year, all schools are closed and most workers are off work, hence it’s a perfect time to bond with families and friends.

The Mother’s Day celebration roots back to the 16th century in the United Kingdom. In reference to the ancient Greeks’ celebration of the Mother’s Day, the holiday was originally celebrated to worship the Mother of the Gods and Goddesses, Rhea, the goddess of fertility, motherhood, comfort, and ease. In the Christian beliefs, the celebration was originally celebrated to give thanks to Mother Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. The current tradition of Mother’s Day is traced back to the beforementioned religious beliefs. Generally, the holiday is all about honoring motherhood, which includes all mother figures such as aunts, grandmothers, stepmothers, and of course, the biological mothers and each of their contributions.
