José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda is known as ‘Pambansang Bayani ng Pilipinas’, which means national hero in the Philippines. He became a national hero through writing novels, essays, and articles as a way of expressing his love for the country. He did not lead an army and use force, instead he used his writing skills to help Filipinos be aware of the Spaniards’ doings. He was recognized by his powerful way of fighting freedom, leading him to become the main national hero in the country.

Rizal Park Events
To mark the heroism of Jose Rizal, the holiday is mostly celebrated in Rizal Park which is commonly known by many as Luneta Park. Luneta Park is a historic urban park where the monument of Jose Rizal can be found. Ceremonies are held in the national park led by the president and vice president of the country along with some high officials. The ceremony is traditionally done during morning involving speeches. 21-gun salute is also practice in honor for the national hero of the Philippines. To commemorate the observance in the province, national flag is raised to remember the nationalism and martyrdom of the hero.
