Is Day after Thanksgiving Day a public holiday in United States?
The Day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday, is a non-federal holiday celebrated in the United States on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day. Though not a federal holiday, it has been designated as a state holiday in twenty-two states including California, Florida, Illinois, Texas, Washington, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Tennessee, South Carolina, West Virginia, Nevada, New Hampshire, and Louisiana, among others. In these states, many business establishments suspend operation.
Although not all states declared it as a state holiday, most of the country’s employers still give their staff or employees a day off on this day, therefore creating a four-day weekend. Schools, on the other hand, are expected to close for the entire Thanksgiving weekend.
About Day After Thanksgiving
Black Friday, a popular term used to refer to the Day after Thanksgiving Day, is the start of a busy Christmas shopping season in the United States.
What is Black Friday?
For the Americans, the day after Thanksgiving is colloquially referred to as ‘Black Friday’. Based on records, the usage of this term dates back on year 1961. It originated in Philadelphia, the largest city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania – where the city’s policemen used such term to describe the heavy traffic and crowds of shoppers seen outside on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day.
For the next several years, the term Black Friday continuously gained popularity. By the late 1980s, the name was then associated with the boost in retail sales in the United States. Black Friday is one of the most profitable days for the shops and stores and therefore on this day, many businesses proceed from being "in the red" to being "in the black" profit narrative. Being “in the red” means the business has negative earnings while being “in the black” indicates positive and better earnings. Considering all shopping activities on Black Friday, a spike in sales is highly expected in most retailers and businesses during its observance.
Day after Thanksgiving, the start of Christmas shopping
The Day after Thanksgiving has been unofficially linked as the beginning of Christmas shopping season in the United States. This is primarily the reason why a change was made on the celebratory date for Thanksgiving. To lengthen the Christmas holiday shopping, Thanksgiving was moved from the last Thursday of November to the fourth Thursday of November. This took place on year 1939, during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s time – though not all states have observed the change. It was only in 1941, as it was declared as a federal holiday, that all states have finally celebrated it on the same day – the fourth Thursday of November. Currently, the Day after Thanksgiving is recognized as one of the busiest shopping days in the country.
Black Friday Traditions in the United States
For most Americans, the entire celebration of the Day after Thanksgiving is practically spent with families and friends. Unwinding and shopping are usually observed.
Black Friday shopping
Since the Day after Thanksgiving marks the start of the Christmas shopping season, many Americans spend the day going to the malls, shops, and stores. This holiday is one of the busiest shopping holidays of the year since most of these shopping malls, stores, and other shopping places offer great deals and deeply discounted rates on their items/products. Crowds of shoppers are lined up already even hours prior to the scheduled opening time of the stores. To cater the large number of shoppers, many stores usually open earlier than usual. Clothing, shoes, accessories, kitchen appliances, cookware, electronic devices, headphones, gaming consoles, and toys are typically the items expected to have reduced prices on Black Friday.
Thanksgiving holiday vacation
Although many Americans tend to go shopping on this day, a lot of other people usually spend the day enjoying their annual Thanksgiving holiday vacation. Since most of the employers often give their workers a day off the day after Thanksgiving, this creates a long weekend for the Americans. Therefore, many of them take advantage of the long holiday break by booking on trips/vacation and unwind together with their loved ones. Others also plan these trips to visit far away family members, relatives, or friends.
