How did Father’s Day celebration start?
Father’s Day originated in Spokane, Washington in year 1910 which was founded by Sonora Smart Dodd. Many believed that Sonora Smart Dodd’s idea of celebrating fatherhood came to life when she attended a mass with church sermon about Mother’s Day. She thought that fatherhood deserves to be celebrated the same way that motherhood is recognized during Mother’s Day. On June 19, 1910, the first celebration of Father's Day was observed at Spokane Washington. On the other hand, others also believe that honoring fatherhood had already happened prior to that. Some people believe that it was on July 5,1908, when Grace Golden Clayton organized the first public Father’s Day celebration. She came up with an idea to honor fathers after over 300 men (many of them are fathers), were killed in a mining accident back in 1907.
Regardless of its origin though, Father’s Day has become one of the most special occasions held every year. From United States, its influence has continuously spread to the rest of the world, and today, many countries have now embraced the idea of Father’s Day celebration.
Common Practices during Father's Day
Since Father’s Day is not a holiday, public establishments and businesses in the United States operate on their regular schedules. On this day, American people typically say “Happy Father’s Day” greetings to their fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, fathers-in-law, uncles, or anyone who serves as their paternal parent.
Gifts and greeting cards
Some would give out Father’s Day cards and letters on this day. Messages should show deep gratitude and appreciation to the father of the family. In the United States, many moms would often give greeting cards to the dads, along with the children during the day’s celebration. Giving gifts like phones, clothes, electronic devices, sports items, or tools are also customary for some Americans. For those who live far from their fathers, a phone call with a greeting or sending of gifts are also practiced.
Family Gatherings
Usually, Americans spend time with their families on Father’s Day. Family gatherings are common, and the dads typically enjoy this day with the company of their loved ones. A large and special meal is often shared by many families. Traditional dishes served at the table include grilled chicken, salmon, pork chop, beef brisket, and grilled steak, among others. Restaurants, be it fine dining or not, tend to be busier than usual too since many people prefer to treat their dads on a special lunch or dinner outside.
