Armenia Summer Time (Historical)
UTC offset: +05:00 (historical, summer only)
Standard offset: +04:00 (AMT, current year-round)

Abbreviation: AMST (no longer active)
DST status: Discontinued (2012)
Armenia Summer Time advanced the country one hour from AMT (UTC+04:00) to UTC+05:00 during summer. The practice followed the EU-style schedule (last Sunday March to last Sunday October) until Armenia abolished it in 2012. Since then, Armenia has maintained permanent UTC+04:00, matching Georgia and the UAE.
The decision to drop DST came during a period when several former Soviet states were reassessing the practice. Russia itself had abolished DST in 2011 (initially freezing on summer time before reverting in 2014). Armenia's parliament voted to end clock changes citing health concerns, public preference, and minimal demonstrated energy savings.
Armenia
A small, landlocked country in the South Caucasus. Population about 2.8 million (down from 3.5 million in 1990 due to emigration). Total area 29,743 km2 (smaller than Belgium). The country is almost entirely mountainous, with an average elevation of 1,792 meters. It's bordered by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey.
Armenia's most famous geographic feature isn't actually in Armenia: Mount Ararat (5,137 m), the biblical landing place of Noah's Ark, sits just across the Turkish border but dominates Yerevan's skyline and Armenian national identity.
Yerevan
Population about 1.1 million (roughly 40% of the country). One of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with settlement dating to approximately 782 BC (the Urartian fortress of Erebuni). The modern city is built of distinctive pink volcanic tuff stone, giving it the nickname "the Pink City."
Yerevan sits at 900-1,300 meters elevation on the Hrazdan River, with Mount Ararat visible to the southwest on clear days. The city was almost entirely rebuilt in the Soviet era (1920s-1970s), replacing the old Persian/Ottoman-era town with Soviet neoclassical architecture. The result is a surprisingly attractive planned city with wide boulevards, cascading terraces, and public squares.

- 1920-1991: Soviet Socialist Republic

- Areni-1 cave: Contains the world's oldest known winery (~4100 BC) and oldest known leather shoe (~3500 BC)
Other Cities
- Gyumri (~120,000): Second city, devastated by the 1988 Spitak earthquake (25,000+ killed). Still recovering. Known for 19th-century black tuff architecture.
- Vanadzor (~80,000): Third city, in the northern Lori province. Former chemical industry center.
- Dilijan: Small town known as "Armenia's Switzerland" for its forested mountain setting.
Economy
Small and dependent on remittances from the large diaspora:
- IT sector (growing rapidly, particularly in Yerevan)
- Mining (copper, molybdenum, gold)
- Agriculture (brandy/cognac, wine, fruits)
- Remittances from Russia, US, France, and Middle East diaspora
- Tourism (growing, particularly cultural/historical)
The Diaspora
About 7-10 million Armenians live outside Armenia (vs. 2.8 million inside). Major communities in Russia, the US (particularly Los Angeles), France, Lebanon, Iran, and Georgia. Diaspora remittances and investment are critical to the economy. The genocide of 1915 and subsequent displacement created this global dispersion.
