Barnaul Standard Time (UTC+07:00)
UTC offset: +07:00
IANA identifier: Asia/Barnaul
Abbreviation: (aligned with Krasnoyarsk Time, KRAT)
Population: approximately 2.3 million (Altai Krai)
DST observed: No
Barnaul runs at UTC+07:00 permanently since 2016, when Altai Krai moved forward one hour from the Omsk Time zone (+06:00) to align with Krasnoyarsk Time. This put Barnaul four hours ahead of Moscow. No DST.
The 2016 shift was the last in a series of Russian time zone adjustments following the 2011 DST abolition. Altai Krai's population preferred the later sunsets that +07:00 provides over the earlier (solar-aligned) +06:00.
The City
Barnaul (~630,000) straddles the Ob River in southwestern Siberia. It's where the steppe meets the foothills, the point where you leave the endless flat grain fields and begin climbing toward the Altai Mountains. The city's role is threefold: regional capital, agricultural processing center, and staging point for mountain tourism.
Founded 1730 during the Demidov silver mining boom. The old smelting works drove early growth. Today Barnaul is a mid-sized Siberian city with Soviet-era industrial districts, a growing university sector, and a compact center along the river.
Agricultural Hub
Altai Krai is one of Russia's breadbaskets:
- Wheat (significant portion of Siberian grain production)
- Sunflower (oil production)
- Dairy and cattle (Altai butter and cheese brands)
- Honey (Altai honey is marketed as premium)
- Buckwheat
The region's black-earth soils and relatively mild (for Siberia) climate support productive farming. Grain exports move by rail through Novosibirsk to Pacific ports or westward to European Russia.
Gateway to the Altai
Barnaul's airport and railway station are the primary entry points for tourists heading to:
- Belokurikha: Spa resort town in the foothills
- Lake Teletskoye: "Altai's Baikal," a deep mountain lake
- Chuya Highway (Chuysky Trakt): One of Russia's most scenic roads, running from Barnaul through the mountains to the Mongolian border
- Mount Belukha (4,509 m): Siberia's highest peak, accessed from the Altai Republic
Climate
Continental:
- January: -17C average (moderately cold, drier than coastal Siberia)
- July: +20C average (warm, occasional heat above 35C)
- Annual precipitation: ~450 mm
- Growing season: ~120 days
- Snow: late October to early April
