Vanuatu runs at UTC+11:00 year-round. No daylight saving. The country is an archipelago of approximately 83 islands (65 inhabited) stretching about 1,300 km through the southwestern Pacific. It lies east of Australia, north of New Zealand, and west of Fiji. The offset matches New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands.

Port Vila

The capital (~50,000) on the island of Efate. A harbor town with duty-free shopping, resort hotels, and the Melanesian character you'd expect from a country that only gained independence in 1980. The waterfront market sells tropical produce, kava, and handicrafts. Cruise ships call regularly.

Port Vila is the economic and administrative center, home to the parliament, most businesses, and the main international airport (Bauerfield, receiving flights from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and New Caledonia).

Tourism (primarily from Australia and New Zealand) dominates the economy. The harbor was damaged by Cyclone Pam (2015) and again by twin cyclones in 2023, highlighting Vanuatu's extreme vulnerability to tropical weather.

Luganville

The second town (~16,000) on the island of Espiritu Santo, northern Vanuatu. During WWII, Espiritu Santo was a major US military base with up to 100,000 troops stationed. After the war, rather than shipping surplus equipment home, the Americans dumped it into the ocean at what became known as "Million Dollar Point." Today it's a scuba diving site where you swim over bulldozers, jeeps, trucks, and Coca-Cola bottles.

The SS President Coolidge, a luxury liner converted to a troop transport, was sunk by friendly mines off Luganville in 1942. It's now one of the world's most accessible large shipwreck dives, sitting in relatively shallow water with much of the interior open to exploration.

Land Diving (Nagol)

On Pentecost Island (southern Vanuatu), men jump from wooden towers 20-30 meters high with vines tied to their ankles. This is the original bungee jump. The ritual occurs during the yam harvest season (April-June) and is tied to agricultural fertility rites. Jumpers aim to brush their shoulders against the ground. Deaths and injuries do occur. The practice is centuries old and predates any Western contact.

Commercial bungee jumping was directly inspired by Nagol after David Attenborough filmed it for the BBC in the 1950s.

Languages

Vanuatu has the highest density of languages per capita in the world. Over 100 distinct languages are spoken by 320,000 people. Bislama (an English-based creole) is the national language and lingua franca. English and French are also official (a legacy of the colonial "Condominium" under joint British-French rule).

Volcanoes

Several active volcanoes dot the archipelago:

  • Yasur (Tanna Island): one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes; visitors can stand on the rim and watch explosions every few minutes. It has erupted continuously for at least 800 years.
  • Ambae (Manaro Voui): erupted violently in 2017-2018, forcing the evacuation of the entire island (~10,000 people)
  • Ambrym: known for its lava lakes (destroyed by eruption/collapse in 2018)

Kastom

"Kastom" (custom) refers to traditional Melanesian practices and governance that remain strong throughout Vanuatu, particularly in outer islands. Village chiefs have real authority. Land is held communally under customary tenure (roughly 98% of land in Vanuatu is under customary ownership). Bride price, grade-taking ceremonies, and traditional dances are living practices, not museum exhibits.

Economy

Tourism, agriculture (copra, cocoa, kava, beef cattle), fishing, and offshore financial services. Vanuatu's tax-haven status (no income tax, no corporate tax) attracts some international business registration. Aid from Australia, NZ, and increasingly China is significant.

Kava is both a domestic social ritual and an export crop. Vanuatu kava is considered among the strongest in the Pacific.
