Easter Island Summer Time (EASST)
UTC offset: -05:00 (summer)
Standard offset: -06:00 (EAST, winter)
IANA identifier: Pacific/Easter
Abbreviation: EASST
Population: approximately 8,000
DST period: First Saturday in September to first Saturday in April (Chile's schedule)
Easter Island Summer Time is the daylight saving designation for Easter Island (Rapa Nui), advancing clocks one hour from UTC-06:00 to UTC-05:00 during the Southern Hemisphere's warmer months. The island follows Chile's national DST rules because it is a special territory of Chile, administered as part of the Valparaiso Region.
The timing aligns with mainland Chile's schedule, though Chile has occasionally suspended or modified DST (as it did from 2015 to 2019 when it stayed on permanent summer time before reverting to seasonal changes). Whatever the mainland does, Easter Island mirrors it but always maintains a consistent two-hour difference from Santiago.
Why DST on a Subtropical Island?
Easter Island sits at about 27°S latitude. That's subtropical, comparable to Brisbane or Durban. Day length does vary noticeably between December (about 14 hours of daylight) and June (about 10.5 hours). The variation justifies a seasonal time shift more than it would for a true equatorial location. An extra hour of evening daylight during the tourist high season (December through March) also benefits the hospitality industry.
The Island
A volcanic triangle in the southeastern Pacific. Three extinct volcanoes form the corners: Poike, Terevaka (507m, the highest point), and Rano Kau (with its stunning crater lake). The coastline is rocky and dramatic, with very few sandy beaches. The interior is rolling grassland interrupted by volcanic cones and stone ruins.
About 900 moai (monolithic carved figures) dot the landscape, most concentrated around the coast on ceremonial platforms called ahu. Ahu Tongariki, with 15 restored moai standing in a row against the ocean, is the most photographed site. The quarry at Rano Raraku contains hundreds more in various stages of completion, abandoned when the carving culture collapsed.
Hanga Roa
The only town. Airport, harbor, schools, hospital, shops, restaurants, hotels, and government offices all concentrate here on the southwestern coast. The entire island operates as a single community. There's one main road circling the island (about 58 km), and most of the interior is parkland.
Tourism
About 100,000 visitors per year arrived before COVID. The island imposed a 30-day visitor limit in 2018 to manage tourism pressure. Most arrive on LATAM flights from Santiago (daily, 5.5 hours). The Rapa Nui community has increasingly asserted control over tourism management, including park access and cultural site preservation.
During EASST (summer), the extended evening light is popular for sunset viewing at sites like Ahu Tahai, where moai are silhouetted against the Pacific. The warmer months (December-March) coincide with peak visitor numbers.
Tapati Rapa Nui
The two-week cultural festival in late January/early February falls during EASST. Competitions include traditional Rapa Nui sports, dance, chant, body painting, and a dramatic sled race down the slopes of Maunga Pu'i. The festival is the cultural heartbeat of the year.
Scheduling During EASST
At UTC-05:00 (summer):
- Santiago, Chile (CLST, UTC-03:00): 2 hours ahead (always)
- New York (EST): same time
- Lima: same time
- London: 5 hours ahead
- Tahiti: 5 hours behind
The match with US Eastern Standard Time during EASST is a coincidence but useful for any scheduling with North America.
