Georgia Summer Time (GEST)
UTC offset: +05:00 (historical, summer only)
Standard offset: +04:00 (GET, year-round since 2005)
IANA identifier: Asia/Tbilisi
Abbreviation: GEST (no longer active)
DST status: Discontinued (2005)
Georgia Summer Time advanced the country's clocks one hour from GET (UTC+04:00) to UTC+05:00 during summer months. Georgia abolished daylight saving time in 2005, settling on permanent UTC+04:00. The decision was part of broader administrative simplification during a period of rapid reform under President Saakashvili.
Why Georgia Dropped DST
Georgia's latitude (~41-43°N) is comparable to southern France or northern Spain. Day length variation exists but isn't extreme. The government concluded that the disruption of clock changes (confusion in transportation, broadcasting, and daily routines) wasn't justified by the minimal energy savings. Since 2005, Georgia hasn't revisited the question.
The permanent +04:00 offset means Georgia is one hour ahead of Moscow Standard Time, which had some political symbolism during the period of deteriorating Russia-Georgia relations (especially after the 2008 war).
Georgia Today
A small country (~3.7 million) in the South Caucasus, bordered by Russia, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, with a Black Sea coastline. Georgia has reinvented itself as a tourism destination, a wine pilgrimage site (8,000 years of winemaking), and a digital nomad hub (one-year remote-work visas).
Tbilisi (~1.2 million): the capital, a city of dramatic contrasts. A medieval fortress (Narikala) overlooks Soviet apartment blocks and glass-and-steel modern architecture. The sulfur bath district (Abanotubani) sits below. The food scene is exceptional: khachapuri, khinkali, pkhali, wine from qvevri (clay vessels). Tbilisi's nightlife (particularly the Bassiani club) gained international reputation.
Batumi (~180,000): the Black Sea resort city, transformed by a building boom into a mini-Dubai with towers, casinos, and a promenade. Summer tourism from Turkey, Russia, and the Middle East drives the economy.
Kutaisi (~150,000): the country's second historical center, near the UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral.
Wine
Georgia claims to be the birthplace of wine. Archaeological evidence (8,000-year-old clay vessels with grape residue) supports the claim. Georgian winemaking using qvevri (large buried clay pots) is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The country has over 500 indigenous grape varieties. The amber wine (skin-contact white) style has influenced natural wine movements globally.
