Krasnoyarsk Standard Time (KRAT)
UTC offset: +07:00
IANA identifier: Asia/Krasnoyarsk
Abbreviation: KRAT
Population: approximately 12 million (expanded zone since 2016)
DST observed: No (abolished 2014)
Krasnoyarsk Standard Time covers a vast swathe of central Siberia at UTC+07:00, four hours ahead of Moscow. Since 2016 zone boundary reforms, the territory includes not only Krasnoyarsk Krai but also Kemerovo Oblast, Khakassia, Tuva, Altai Krai, Altai Republic, Novosibirsk Oblast, and Tomsk Oblast. That's roughly 12 million people across an area larger than Western Europe.
The offset matches Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta (WIB), and western Mongolia. It places central Siberia one hour behind China and Beijing.
Krasnoyarsk
The regional capital (~1.1 million), Siberia's third-largest city after Novosibirsk and Omsk. Straddling the Yenisei River at its midpoint, Krasnoyarsk was founded in 1628 as a Cossack fort. The city is now a major educational center (Siberian Federal University), an industrial hub (aluminum, aerospace, machinery), and gateway to nature tourism.
The Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Dam (6,000 MW capacity) generates cheap electricity that attracted the aluminum industry. The dam's reservoir stretches 390 km upstream.
The city hosted the 2019 Winter Universiade, leaving a legacy of modern sports venues. Cultural life includes the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, one of the largest in Siberia.
Novosibirsk
Russia's third-largest city (~1.6 million) joined KRAT from Omsk Time (+06:00) in 2016. The switch was controversial. Novosibirsk's Akademgorodok (a Soviet-era science city) is one of Russia's main research centers. The city is the unofficial "capital of Siberia."
The Kuzbass (Kemerovo Oblast)
Russia's primary coal-mining region. The Kuznetsk Basin produces about 60% of Russia's coal. Mining is dangerous (explosions, collapses) and economically dominant. The city of Kemerovo (~560,000) and Novokuznetsk (~550,000) are the main urban centers. Environmental damage from decades of mining is severe.
Tuva
The Republic of Tuva (~330,000) is geographically the center of Asia (a monument in Kyzyl marks the spot). Tuvan culture is distinctive: throat singing (khoomei, a UNESCO Intangible Heritage) produces multiple simultaneous pitches from a single voice. Nomadic herding traditions persist. The landscape is mountainous steppe, transitioning to taiga. Buddhist temples and shamanic practitioners coexist.
Altai
The Altai Mountains (shared with Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan) contain some of Siberia's most spectacular scenery: glacial lakes, alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks. The "Golden Mountains of Altai" are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adventure tourism (rafting, hiking, horseback) is growing. Indigenous Altai people maintain shamanic traditions.
Trans-Siberian Railway
The railway passes through multiple KRAT cities: Novosibirsk (km 3,343), Krasnoyarsk (km 4,098). It's the backbone of Siberian freight transport (coal, timber, oil products heading east and west).
